Your post makes me want to visit this place even more, Lannie. How nice to hear Stromfields were of assistance.

The way I see it most places are dark tourism to some extent. Romania had Vlad the Impaler, Normandy has Omaha & Juno, San Francisco had 1906, and here in Old Blighty we have Brexit.

There are quite a few places I visited where I wished the menu had said “food safe, everything transported from safe zone” like England in the 90s.

Well, the cavaet on my hair falling out is that i have tons and tons of hair. and it falls out regularly even before Chernobyl. But I definitely noticed it more in the 1-2 weeks after visiting. It was a sobering trip, that, I'll agree with. But for me, some things I just need to see with my own eyes.

Lannie when I read of your hair falling out more than normal after your visit I was horrified! I watched the tv series about Chernobyl recently and it certainly opened my eyes to what actually happened there other than the press coverage of the explosion at the time it happened. I know that dark tourism is on the increase but although it is extremely interesting I'm not sure I would want to go there.

Wow, this is such a fascinating experience. I would love to visit Chernobyl one day as I, like you, enjoy visiting these unique places and learning about the history. I had no idea there was so much that went into a visit like the 72 hour notice and the dress code. I also agree that you should be respectful when visiting places of tragedy and don't think I'd be doing a photoshoot like that Spanish couple!

What an interesting day out Lannie. You're completely right that these kind of places deserve a level of respect. There are so many things we can learn from the darker moments in history but we still have to remember the cost.

We were supposed to visit this year as part of a big European road trip in our van but unfortunately, covid had other plans.

Glad to see you made it. And hope we'll still get to visit soon.

I too have a fascination with dark tourism. It’s a your I too would do, though maybe not as enthusiastically as before. That Geiger counter is a little worrying. Think it went above .30. I didn’t know they built a new roof for it, it sounds quite awe inspiring. Though it’s one I wouldn’t like to have over my head.
Ps must be something wrong with the spanish tourists who were there.

I would love to visit Chernobyl, but eventually we decided against it with Alexandra as we were a bit afraid of the radiation.

It looks incredible though, frozen in time and pretty similar to the TV show... Such a dark but interesting place.

Fantastic post Lannie. I was at high school when the incident happened but can’t remember too much of what was reported so it was watching the TV show that really brought home to me the scale of the devastation.

A visit is definitely something I’d like to do but having read this I can see how stressful it’d be. I’ve visited a few dark tourism spots and you’ve covered your visit in a really respectful way. Your photos are fantastic - the one of the calendar is so poignant.
