Recently, I was gifted a Wonderbag slow cooker.  Although I consider myself a foodie and someone who likes to cook, I’ve never actually owned a slow cooker.  I guess I never felt like I needed it, thinking slowly simmering something on the stove would achieve the same purpose.  Of course, never considering how much electricity or gas I’d use.  It’s easy to take all of that for granted.  All of that stops now. But before you think Wonderbag is a regular slow cooker, let me tell you the amazing story behind Wonderbag.

Although I was gifted a Wonderbag slow cooker,
all opinions in this post are my own.

1. Wonderbag Empowers Women in Communities

It all began in 2008, during a national power outage in South Africa, entrepeneur and social activist Sarah Collins invented and founded the Wonderbag. Using wonderbag to cook, saves on electricity or firewood, as it continues to cook its contents for up to 12 hours!

Nowadays, Wonderbag helps to support women and girls in communities. Financially, many women become independent by selling food made in their Wonderbag. The reduction in time from actively cooking, girls are encouraged to stay in school.  Money from charcoal and firewood can also be saved.  Less cooking also means less indoor air pollution, which promotes better health for the whole family. Additionally, Wonderbag reduces the need for women and girls to collect firewood, which often leaves the vulnerable to sexual assault or other violence.

Cooking with a Wonderbag has significant money, water and energy savings – and the environmental benefits that will automatically transpire are enormous too! Just one Wonderbag used over a year reduces up to 1,5 tons of carbon emissions annually, reduces exposure to indoor air-pollution by up to 60% in homes cooking with biomass materials, saves five trees annually from being cut down to prevent deforestation, reduces fuel costs for cooking by up to 80%, and saves over 1000 litres of water every year.

So, now you know how incredible Wonderbag is to women, girls and the communities they support.  Before you think that this product belongs with people who cook over an open fire, I can tell you – it can be for everyone.  Think of the electricity or gas you could cut down on by using a Wonderbag non-electric slow cooker versus a regular slow cooker.

2. Guinness Stew in the Wonderbag Slow Cooker

When I received my Wonderbag slow cooker, I had just settled into my new home in Islay.  Although it was April and spring for the rest of the world, a winter storm was coming.  I picked up some ingredients to make a Guinness stew to tide me over and keep me warm with the snow and howling wind.  (Full recipe here)

The beginnings of a Guinness stew

Step 4 of the recipe says:

  • Bring stew to a gentle simmer, stirring to combine; reduce heat to low and cover pot. Simmer stew until beef is fork-tender, about 2 hours.

Instead of simmering for 2 hours, I brought the stew to a boil for about 20 minutes.  And then into the Wonderbag it went.  Exactly 4 hours later, with no additional electricity expended, I took my stew out of the Wonderbag.

The beef became really tender, and the rich malt of the Guinness made the stew absolutely perfect. And it was still piping hot!  Hot enough to put directly into a bowl and cosily partake in my Guinness stew.  I immediately put the lid back on my Le Creuset and placed it back into the Wonderbag slow cooker for additional cooking.  Don’t get me wrong, the beef was already tender.  But hey, if I’m not using up any electricity, might as well make the stew heartier.  The room that I stored the Wonderbag and stew in was quite cold due to the impending snow.  And the Wonderbag and contents stayed warm throughout!

3. Information on the Wonderbag non-electric slow cooker

The Wonderbag slow cooker is made from a durable polyester cotton blend fabric, and filled with their proprietary blend of chipped foam for maximum insulation. It features carry handles and is fully reversible.

  • I was gifted a large Wonderbag (which holds a 5-10 Liter pot), which sells for $59 USD in the US.
  • There is also a small Wonderbag (which holds a 1-2 Liter pot), and sells for $39 USD in the US.

The Wonderbag non-electric slow cooker is available in the UK, US, South Africa, and other countries.

If you’re into sustainable cooking solutions and want an easy non-electric slow cooker, the Wonderbag is for you!

4. Support Women and Communities with Wonderbag

Wonderbag was created to support women, where one of their primary roles within the household is to cook. By utilizing Wonderbag, women and girls can save time on actively monitoring their stews in the kitchen. There’s also timesaving in the gathering of firewood or other fuel required for slow cooking. The less fuel / energy they use in the kitchen, the cleaner their lungs will be from the pollution caused by kitchen smoke. I’m really only naming a few of the benefits women in these communities gain from utilizing the Wonderbag slowcooker.

For those thinking about purchasing Wonderbag, consider the Women for Women bundle as an add-on to your own Wonderbag. In addition to your own non-electric slow cooker, Wonderbag will donate one to a woman in communities they support. Wonderbag will deliver this gift through their network of community partners.

If you already have a slow cooker and aren’t in the market for a non-electric slow cooker, you can always support Wonderbag and all of their community-based initiatives through their donate page.

{Just as a disclaimer, I am not an affiliate of Wonderbag and there is no financial connection between us. I was gifted the wonderbag, but all opinions contained in this post are my own}
