Now, I’m not going to go through every Outlander filming location and I can’t guarantee any time travel through the stones, but I’ve included the main sites that any Outlander-fans must visit. And don’t worry, the main Outlander castles (i.e. Lallybroch, Castle Leoch) and all of the classic Outlander locations are on this list!

And because the (Outlander) Fraser family motto is Je Suis Prest (“I am ready”), I’ve tried to tailor this post to give you the most helpful information to prepare you for your visit!

• I’ve included ticket prices, seasonal openings, and public transportation directions. If it was easy for me to find the transport costs, I’ve included that as well, but they’re not included for each location.
  • For most buses in Scotland, you don’t need to buy a ticket in advance, and can tap a contactless card when boarding to pay for your journey.
• There are also some guided tour options, for some of the locations harder to reach by public transportation, or if you want to just take it easy on the logistical plans for your trip.
• If you’re planning to visit multiple locations, there could be some cost savings if you join National Trust of Scotland or the Historic Environment of Scotland. There’s a section at the end detailing out the admission costs if you’re planning to visit more than one.

1. Lallybroch – Midhope Castle

🎥 Did they actually film here?  Yes! This is Lallybroch, both in the 18th century and the 21st century, as Bri and Roger’s new home. Interior scenes not shot here, due to structural issues with the building. Lallybroch (or Midhope Castle) is arguably one of the most iconic Outlander locations in Scotland! Along with Castle Leoch (or Doune Castle), its one of the two main Outlander castles.

🎥 Did they actually film here?  No, the Callanish Standing Stones are technically not one of the official Outlander filming locations in Scotland.  For various reasons, the stones were made from styrofoam and filmed near Loch Rannoch (in Perth).  But the stones are said to be inspired by the Callanish Standing Stones.
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Included in Outlander group tours? Not in an Outlander themed tour, but there are 3 day tours of Lewis and Harris where the Callanish Standing Stones are! The tours depart from Inverness.

3. Castle Leoch – Doune Castle

🎥 Did they actually film here?  Yes. Many of the Castle Leoch scenes in Season 1 were filmed here!
⭐️ Not to ruin the surprise but Sam Heughan narrates the audio tour, so you’ll definitely get a behind-the-scenes look into the Outlander filming at Doune Castle!

4. Cranesmuir – Culross

🎥 Did they actually film here?  Yes.  Inside Culross Palace, they filmed Geiliss Duncan’s parlor. Culross Palace gardens also doubled as the Castle Leoch herb gardens.  If you opt to tour Culross Palace, you’ll get more behind-the-scenes info inside! Be sure to roam around the village too. Nearby is the Culross Mercat Cross where that poor boy got his ear nailed to the cross!  
⭐️ Strolling around in Culross transports you back to 1745 Crainsmuir. If there was ever a village that embodies Outlander more, it has to be Culross!

5. Culloden Battlegrounds

🎟️ Entry is free to the battlefield, which is open 24-7; however I would highly recommend including the visitor center in your Culloden plans, entry is 14 GBP. Culross Palace and Pollock House are all part of the National Trust of Scotland, so consider joining the National Trust of Scotland for additional cost savings, including family memberships!
🚌 Accessible by public transportation?  Yes.
– ScotRail to Inverness, Bus 27 from Inverness to the Culloden Battlegrounds.

🎥 Did they actually film here?  Technically, the actual Culloden battle scenes in the series was not filmed at Culloden, but part of the 1960s flashbacks when Claire the Clan Fraser memorial stone to talk to the ghost of Jamie. Fans will note the Clan Fraser memorial stone has been blocked off due to heavy foot traffic. Please be respectful, as this is an actual battlefield site with clan memorials and shallow graves of the fallen.

The visitor center at the museum is great and helps to explain the Bonnie Prince Charlie’s story which brought the Jacobites directly to this battleground.

6. Pollok House and Pollok Country Park

⭐️ The Pollok Country Park is a lovely green space located just outside of Glasgow central. There are highland cows grazing the grounds, and an incredible art museum at the Burrell Collection. The area is a must visit for when you’re in Glasgow!

7. “Fort William” – Blackness Castle

🎥 Did they actually film here?  Yes. The scenes were not filmed in the town of Fort William.
⭐️ One of my favorite Outlander locations in Scotland to visit! Blackness Castle is a mighty castle at the edge of the sea. A uniquely shaped castle closely resembling a ship (“the ship that never sailed”), Blackness Castle was built onto the rocky outcroppings on the shore. This rockiness is seen even in the courtyard of the castle, where a young Jamie Fraser was flogged. You can walk along the wall, and imagine Jamie and Claire diving into the sea as they escape Fort William.

• Duncarron Medieval Village – This open air museum doubles in Outlander as Fort Ticonderoga (in New York) in Season 7’s Battle of Ticonderoga. Fun fact, it was also used in the filming of Robin Hood (2010) and Outlaw King (2018). Various period-related film props and sets that were built for filming these movies (+ Outlander) were donated to Duncarron Medieval Village. From Outlander, there is now a Bastion, some outbuildings, and a tower in the village.

  • Public transportation not advised. You can take a combination of trains/buses from Edinburgh or Glasgow to Stoneywood, Denny. However, there is still 6 miles from there to Duncarron Medieval Village.

Of course there were also the (slightly miserable) ones in Southeast Asia, slowly bouncing along at night from Bangkok to Laos, where you felt the tug and pull of the train every time it thought it could. But that was then, this is now. So sit back, relax, and let’s chug along together on this overnight train adventure!

Welcome to the Caledonian Sleeper, your sleeper train to the Highlands.

1. Introducing the Caledonian Sleeper

The Caledonian Sleeper is the only sleeper train to Scotland and is a true gem of British travel. Whether you’re heading up to Scotland for business or pleasure, the Caledonian Sleeper is both luxurious and convenient – two factors that often make the best journey. It has cozy private cabins and individual seats (something for everyone!), delicious dining options (both room service and in the club car / lounge car), and stunning views of the English and Scottish countryside.

From London Euston at night, the Caledonian Sleeper connects you to one of these great places in Scotland:

• Glasgow Central
• Inverness: includes stops in Stirling, Gleneagles, Aviemore
• Fort William
• and Aberdeen.

For the purposes of this post, I am writing with London as the starting point. This trip can also be done in reverse – from any of those 5 locations in Scotland, down to London in the morning.

There are a few different options for seats / accommodations on board the Caledonian Sleeper. Both seats and cabins have accessible options for those who may need it. Train tickets for accessible rooms and seats can now be booked online!

Prices for the Caledonian Sleeper depend on the actual route you’re taking (some are longer than others) and how early you book your tickets, so with all things, planning ahead is always better!

• Comfort Seats start from 50 GBP,
• Classic Rooms from 175 GBP for Solo or 205 GBP for Shared,
• Club Rooms from 235 GBP for Solo and 290 GBP for Shared, and
• Caledonian Doubles from 345 GBP for Solo and 410 GBP for Shared.

These prices are for a one-way journey. If you want a round trip, simply book two one-ways. There are no cost savings with booking a return journey.

The complimentary Sleep Kit, which comes with all reservations, includes an eye mask and ear plugs. The additional pouch with Arran Sense of Scotland amenities (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, lip balm, anti-bacterial gel and hand cream) are included in Caledonian Double.

– Is the Caledonian Sleeper worth it?

The short answer: if you’re 2 people – definitely yes! If you’re 1 person, I still say yes – even if you want to get a cabin.

Normally, I travel between London and Glasgow on the Avanti West Coast train. On average, it costs 100 GBP one-way and takes 4.5 hours. When you take into consideration a hotel room either in Glasgow (100 GBP) or London (200+ GBP), the cost justification becomes a little easier.

• To compare, on average, the Classic Room on this route costs 210 GBP and will take between 8-10 hours. But, you’ve moved from A to B in your sleep and you can start your day in a new city!

Additionally, according to a 2021 Rail & Transit Study, taking the overnight train to Scotland instead of flying reduces the carbon footprint by almost 90%!

• Total kgCO2/ep for Flight & Hotel: 288.9

So, taking the sleeper train is an environmentally friendly way to travel between London and Scotland!

2. The new Caledonian Sleeper Lounge at London Euston

Prior to my near-midnight departure from London Euston, guests in Caledonian Club Room and Caledonian Double Rooms are invited to relax in the new Caledonian Sleeper Lounge at London Euston. If you’re heading to Glasgow or Edinburgh, you can access the lounge starting from 20:45, basically after the passengers for the Aberdeen, Fort William and Inverness train are fully boarded onto their train.

The new lounge, just opened in 2024 is located on Platform 1, right next to where you’ll board the train. With comfortable seats, free drinks and snacks available (hot foods and alcohol available for a fee), and clean, shower facilities, what’s not to enjoy about the lounge?

For me, it had been a long day, so a shower was a must. Yes, I have a shower inside my Caledonian Double Suite, but a stationary shower is better than one where you’re balancing with the motion of the railway tracks! And boy, after a long day, there is nothing better than a shower!

Just ask the lounge attendant for a towel. The showers are equipped with Arran Sense of Scotland shampoo and body wash.

💡Expert tips on showering in the Euston Guest Lounge:

• I always travel with a pair of flip-flops, and I’m glad I had them with me! There was no bath mat available yet.
• There are also no hair dryers yet, so either ask for an extra towel in the beginning or use your bath towel to towel dry your hair.
• There is a heated towel rack in the cubicle.
• While there is room in the shower cubicle for my small luggage and backpack, I continuously had to maneuver around to grab things out of my luggage that I needed. Smartly pack your bag in advance to accommodate this!

The Euston Guest Lounge is brand new in 2024, and it was already a relaxing way to start my journey. I didn’t opt for a pre-boarding meal, but I spotted a few folks enjoying the haggis, neeps and tatties. It looked great!

3. Boarding the Caledonian Sleeper

If you’re in the lounge, an announcement will be made when its time to board. But if you’re not in the lounge, the sign boards in London Euston station will let you know when boarding begins. The Caledonian Sleeper departs from Platform 1, which is on the very right end of the station.

The carriages are in order depending on where /when you depart the train. There are train attendants along the way to show you the way, and to check you in once you arrive at the right carriage. They’ll tell you that your room (if you had one) is unlocked and the key is found inside it.

And while it’s not mandatory by any means, might I suggest plopping down on your bed for an obligatory comfy selfie as you settle in and relax for your overnight train journey ahead!

4. Food and Drink options on the luxury sleeper train to Scotland

Honestly, who would I be if I didn’t devote a mini section to the food and drink?

The food and drinks available on the Caledonian Sleeper differ depending on which route you’re taking – Edinburgh and Glasgow routes enjoy the Lowlander menu, whereas Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William guests will have the Highlander menu. I took a quick peak at both of them, and don’t worry – no matter if you’re traveling the Lowlander or Highlander route, whisky, haggis, and Irn Bru are on both menus, so rest assured – you can try all 3 and become an Honorary Scot!

Traveling on the Caledonian Sleeper during the summer time means that sunrise is earlier, and you’ll get incredible views while you enjoy your breakfast.

If you’re in the Caledonian Double (first class) or the Club Room, breakfast is included in your ticket, which can be eaten in the Club Car or served in your room. Note the final breakfast service times at the bottom. For most destinations, you’ll need to be served before 7 am (except Fort William and Inverness), so if you’re not an early bird, set an alarm so you won’t miss breakfast! Hang your breakfast order on the door within 30 minutes after departure.

There is also an in-seat / room service dining menu available for Classic Room and Seated Coach travelers.

Matured for 8 years in an American oak ex-bourbon cask, this single cask whisky is bottled at 50% ABV.

5. Caledonian Sleeper First Class Review – my true life experience

I am writing this section at 05:30 from an empty Club Car, as the train sits at Edinburgh Waverley station waiting for our Edinburgh passengers to alight. It’s my first trip on the Caledonian Sleeper

The train normally departs London Euston past 23:00 but there were some planned engineering works on the tracks, so our departure time was earlier than normal. By the time I fell asleep around 22:30, we hadn’t really left the greater London area yet. We chugged along for a bit and then stopped for quite some time. I don’t know why, but I was waiting for the excitement of a moving train before going to bed. Sometimes we can be a bit silly, I guess.

I read online that the Club Car can get rowdy and busy at night, and due to limited seating, you should hurry up and rush there to grab a table. Passengers staying in a room have access to the Club Car, with those in Caledonian Doubles having priority access. And as soon as I got settled in my cabin, I went down to the Club Car. Over the next hour, only a handful of people used the Club Car – a lady was dining, two gentlemen were having a drink, and another gentleman was sitting reading on his iPad. Maybe I just boarded a train full of introverts, which is fine by me.

So now that I’ve done the Club Car, it’s time for me to shower and head to bed. Towels are provided in a big pouch hanging on the door.

Although it’s small, I’m grateful for the en-suite bathroom and shower. I didn’t expect the shower pressure to be anything to write home about, and it definitely isn’t. For people thinking about washing their hair, think twice. The water pressure on my train was definitely not strong enough to rinse shampoo out of your hair.

The toilet basin has a big wooden cover with a handle, so you really only lift up the cover when using the toilet. There is a little nook inside that stores the toilet paper, so nothing gets wet when you shower.

Be careful, the lock on the door latch juts out, and maybe I bumped into it while showering.

Regardless of if you have a toilet and shower in your cabin, all cabins include a sink and basin for brushing your teeth and washing your face.

In the cabin itself, the bed made up the majority of the room. My luggage went under the bed, which left me with a small standing area / walkway between the door and the sink. For me, a somewhat clumsy but petite person, I bumped and knocked myself along the walls as I changed into my pajamas.

I dimmed the lights and began to settle in bed, but I quickly got up to grab the eye mask from the complimentary sleep kit and put it on. Various emergency buttons emit light in the cabin, and this gal enjoys complete darkness in sleep.

When my alarm woke me at 04:00 (don’t ask), I had slept better than any overnight journey in memory. Although I remember feeling the train moving in my sleep, it didn’t feel disruptive but rather a gentle lulling. And that brings me to now, 05:30 am, in the Club Car enjoying my bacon roll breakfast by myself.

Don’t let my simple bacon roll with its tongue sticking out dissuade you from choosing a simpler breakfast versus the full Scottish. Sometimes a bacon roll with a smidge of brown sauce is all I need to start my day in Scotland right!

After my breakfast roll, there was plenty of time to hang out in my cabin as we made the final leg of the journey between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The majority of the journey was completed under the cover of night. As dawn was about to break, I opened the window blinds for some light and some views. By then, the countryside was already in the distance, and I was left with urban views to finish off the evening’s journey.

6. Parting Thoughts on my overnight train to Scotland

All in all, I was happier with this train ride than I thought I would be! I’ll be honest that I had been eyeing this overnight train for a long time, but each time I’d see the 2-300+ GBP price tag per room, it would stop me in my tracks. But in reality, I never spent the time to think about how much money I would save with one less hotel night in Glasgow/London. So in the end, for a solo traveler, it isn’t too bad!

The double bed was very luxurious for the train, when you’d normally only have a bunk bed. I don’t think I need the first class Caledonian Double every time, but for my first time, it was a nice splurge.

However, I do think you need to set your expectations for what a “luxury overnight train” should be. In a different time and place, luxury train travel would include caviar, afternoon tea services, and glamour that oozes affluence and class like James Bond. While the Caledonian Sleeper isn’t all that, it’s still very nice and a wonderfully comfortable journey!

Since my first time on the Caledonian Sleeper, I’ve have used this overnight train service a number of times, in both the Club Room (bunk beds) and the Double Room. While the Double Room is definitely more luxurious with the big bed and no second bunk hanging over you, the Club Room is still a very comfortable overnight train experience.

While I’ve heard people complain about the top bunk being hard to access with a moving train, I just have to remind folks that this is indeed a moving train. People with mobility issues should not attempt to mess around with the top bunk, as the train’s motions on the train tracks aren’t guaranteed to be seemless. Think of it as turbulence on the rails, and something you need to be careful of.

Similarly, that also means the train rocks and sways as you sleep as well. Light sleepers may be bothered by this, and while this is still a comfortable journey, it’s definitely not the same as sleeping in your own bed. I just want to manage expectations, because the Caledonian Sleeper is a truly fantastic overnight train.

Also, for those wanting to take advantage of the stunning views of the countryside, be aware that outside of summer months, the nights are dark and long. If you’re only traveling between London and Glasgow / Edinburgh (the Lowlands), expect to arrive in Scotland still under the cover of night. If you’re headed all the way up to the Highlands, you may catch a glimpse of a gorgeous sunrise before you disembark.

Taking the train in the summer with the increased daylight hours really only make the journey more stunning, especially those traveling on the Highland lines up north. You’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful highland landscape with your morning coffee and breakfast.

Whether you opt for a simple seat, a Classic Room (bunk beds, no toilet/shower), a Club Room (bunk beds, with en-suite), or a Double Room (big bed, with en-suite facilities), there is something for everyone’s budget and sensibilities.

8. FAQ for the Caledonian Sleeper

• Is this the only overnight train in the UK? No, aside from the Caledonian Sleeper, the Night Riviera Sleeper runs overnight train services between London and Cornwall.
• How much luggage can I bring with me? Each guest can bring 3 items of personal luggage on board for free – two suitcases (no bigger than 30cm x 70cm x 90cm / 11.8 in x 27.6 in x 35.4 in) plus one item of hand luggage.
  • If you have larger items, let the on-board teams know and they can store it separately.
  • There is space under the bed for your suitcases. If you are staying in the Club Room or Caledonian Double, do not put your luggage in the en-suite bathroom, because if it falls it can block the door from opening.
• How much is the Caledonian Sleeper family ticket? Family ticket prices depend on how many rooms are required per family, but there will always be a guaranteed bed for all travelers, including children. A quick check showed 2 adults, 2 children in 2 classic rooms, booked as a family ticket cost 450 GBP. But as noted above, prices vary depending on a number of factors. There are a handful of inter-connected rooms available for families.
• Is there a first class on the Caledonian Sleeper? Caledonian Double ticket-holders are considered in first class, which is why they have a big bed, receive the extra amenity kit and have priority seating in the Club Car.
• Is there lounge access before boarding? The guest lounge, similar to an airline’s first class lounge, is a good way to relax before your journey. Different stations have different lounge specs (some include showers, others share lounge space with other train lines, access to some depend on your ticket type). Get more information on the lounge and your access.
• Can I bring furry friends on board? Up to 2 pets can join you on board if you’ve reserved a room. Sorry, for those who booked seats only, your furry friend can’t join you. There is no ticket cost for your furry friend, but there will be an additional 30 GBP cleaning fee per room.
• Can I bring my bicycle on board? Yes you can! Bicycles don’t cost extra, but you will need to reserve a space for it during your booking. (whoops, forgot to? Don’t worry – just contact Guest Services and they will add the bicycle reservation to your booking).
• Technical stuff: Yes, there is Wi-Fi on board, but there are some sections of limited service. In each room and at the comfort seats, there are power outlets (and USB-A ports) for charging small devices.
• Shower, if I don’t have the en-suite: For those traveling in seated coach or class rooms (and do not have an en-suite shower), you can purchase Shower Tokens on board to access showers in Fort William, London Euston, and Inverness after you arrive. Towels come included!
• Left Luggage facilities: If you need to dump your luggage before or after your trip, there are left luggage facilities at London Euston, Glasgow Central, Glasgow Queen Street, Edinburgh Waverley, Inverness and Fort William for a fee.
• Railcard discounts? Certain National Railcard holders may receive discounts on their fare, depending on a few factors. Read up on the Railcard Discounts offered on Caledonian Sleeper.

This post will be the first in a series, highlighting the events that I attended with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, during food and whisky pairing month.  There’s still a few events left in August, so hurry and sign up for them!  Most of the food and whisky pairing events are for both members and non-members alike (probably to reel in and delight those non-members!)  For those sad folks that can’t manage, don’t worry – there are delectable food options in the SMWS Member Rooms at all times, and your SMWS Ambassador will help you make a delicious pairing with their current outturn offerings.

The first food and whisky pairing event I attended was hosted at SMWS Queen Street in Edinburgh.  Executive Head Chef James Freeman created an exquisite 6 course tasting menu, with each course paired with a SMWS whisky to enhance the whisky experience.  Most people I’ve spoken to consider whisky an after-dinner drink, often considering whisky during dinner to be too heavy.  While I wouldn’t suggest it for every night of the week, on certain special occasions, it can be just the thing.

Your typical food and whiskey pairings are charcuterie platters (meats and cheeses go nicely with heavy, rich whiskies) and chocolates or desserts, where the sweet flavors enhance the soft sweetness in the whiskies. But this? One whisky per meal course? Unheard of, and so decadent!

Before I begin on that evening’s frivolities, allow me to express my great thanks to:

• Our dinner companions, who added light-hearted laughter and color to the dinner;
• And my friend, Jenny, who joined as my plus one.

Without further ado:

The SMWS Food and Whisky Pairing Tasting Menu

The evening started out with some bread to pad the stomach of the many whiskies to come.  The bread, thematically sitting on barley grains, came with two types of butter – tomato and wild garlic and fennel herb.  When it came out, my friend said “I know which butter you’re going for.”  And it’s true.  Tell me something has garlic in it, and I’m all over it!  If a recipe calls for 1 clove, you gotta put in at least 4.  Anyway, I digress.  Don’t get too excited with the delicious bread and butter, because the first course is coming.

1st course: Torched Mackerel & a Highland

Torched Mackerel with purple potato, apple, compressed cucumber, horseradish buttermilk and dill

Contrapuntal Complementarities – 52.39 (Old Pulteney), a Highland whisky – aged 7 years, at 57.9% ABV

According to Logan, the mackerel had a “bitterness to it”, where the sweet and citrus of the whisky helped to balance out that flavor.

2nd course: Tomato & burrata, with a Speyside

Isle of Wight tomato with basil emulsion, burrata, baby courgettes and wild garlic

A bee swarm on holiday – 36.165 (Benrinnes), a Speyside whisky – aged 12 years, 57.7% ABV

Fruity, vanilla, warm with cloves – a perfect pairing with the light, freshness of a tomato basil salad. The tanginess of the tomato brought out the sweet notes of the whisky.

3rd course: Salmon & a 17 year Speyside

Roast fillet of Loch Duart Salmon, lobster and summer vegetable bisque with a lemon and caper relish

Fruits of the Florist – 7.232 (Longmorn), a Speyside whisky – aged 7 years, 59.1% ABV

By unanimous decision, everyone’s favorite whisky of the evening. A little spice, custard and creme brulee. According to logan, when paired with the salmon and capers, “brings out a weirdness in the whisky.” I dunno about “the weirdness”, but it was definitely everyone’s favorite.

4th course: Quail & a smoky Speyside

Roast quail with bargoule mousse, buckwheat emulsion, crispy potato gratin, chanterelle mushrooms and a redcurrant sauce

Pleasing Sweetness, Playful Heat 64.111 (Mannochmore), a Speyside whisky – aged 8 years, 55.5% ABV

To quote one of the dinner guests, “It doesn’t taste as bad as some of the peaty ones I’ve had!” Now, if that’s not a seal of approval, I don’t know what is.

5th course: Strawberries & autumn in the Highlands

Strawberry meringue with roasted strawberry sorbet, elderflower crème fraiche and strawberry salad

When autumn leaves start to fall – Society Cask (Dalmore), a Highland whisky, aged 13 years, 58% ABV

A second fill sherry cask, and then finished in a first fill bourbon cask for 1 year – what can I say? I love a sherry cask, and its sweetness always goes with a delectable dessert. The strawberry-centric dessert was light and refreshing, perfect for a summer evening!

6th course: Decadent chocolate cheesecake & a Highland whisky

Brillat Savarin & caramel chocolate cheesecake with a dark chocolate glaze, served with vanilla ice-cream.

Raisin cane – 55.4 (Loch Lomond -Inchmurrin), a Highland whisky, aged 19 years, 55.4% ABV

I think I was too many whiskies in to appreciate the last pairing. The whisky had wood characteristics (kind of like furniture polish), with a hint of sweetness and cloves. But that dessert!! I’m a chocolate fan, so everything about this spoke to me!

Parting Thoughts on SMWS Food and Whisky Tasting Menu

Coming into this evening, I wasn’t sure how it would pan out. A six course tasting menu – did that mean there were six whiskies too? (Why yes, it does!!) The Scotch Malt Whisky Society obviously delivers on the whisky front. There’s no question about that. But could it deliver on the food front? 100% YES. The quality of the food was phenomenal and absolutely delicious. The plating was stunning, too. As one of the dinner guests said with confidence, “I’ve never had a bad meal here.”

Now, about having one whisky per course… to be fair, you don’t have to do whisky pairings. One of the ladies in our group was not a whisky fan, so she chose to have wine pairings with it. But beware – if we have six whiskies, that means she had six wines!

What I’ve learned so far about food and whisky tastings. I’m not sure the whisky enhances the food. On the contrary though, the food definitely enhances the whisky. Sometimes on a first sip, the whisky can taste sharp – rough around the edges, if you will. By taking a bite of food in between sips of whisky, the whisky smooths out. Some of the more subtle flavors make an appearance and become bolder.

The cost of the dinner was 89£ per person, which doesn’t come cheap for a dinner. However, that was a 6 course meal with 6 whisky pairings. When you add it up like that, the food and whiskey pairings definitely become worth it! Not every night needs to have a decadent meal. But for that special night out, whisky fans, consider having a food and whisky pairing at Scotch Malt Whisky Society! The food I’ve tasted so far is exquisite, and the whisky – well, that goes without saying – phenomenal!

Jokingly, a dinner guest said, “The world could end tomorrow – this could be your last meal.” And while a little on the grim side, the better way to think of that is, carpe diem! Seize the day! Sometimes you just need to treat yourself to something exquisite, and that’s perfectly ok!

1. Before you visit Holyrood Palace, a little royal history!

There aren’t too many palaces in Scotland, but the Palace of the Holyroodhouse is the official residence of the British Monarch in Scotland. The Royal Collection Trust administers the palace, also known as Holyroodhouse, and is normally open to visitors. When the King is in residence, Holyrood Palace remains closed to tourists.

Even though the palace itself is relatively modern, it sits on the grounds of the old Holyrood Abbey, founded in 1128 by King David I. The name Holyrood, basically means “Holy Cross”. In the old Scots language, “rood” is the word for the cross in which Jesus was crucified.

I mean, you really can’t visit Holyrood Palace without knowing what the name in Scots mean, right?

By the 15th century, the guesthouse of the abbey was converted into a royal residence. Ruins of the old abbey are still on the grounds itself and is a beautiful reminder of a different time. The palace as we know it today dates back to the late 1600s, built to commemorate the restoration of Charles II’s reign.

You’ll also learn about the most famous resident (1561 – 1567) of Holyrood Palace Mary, Queen of Scots. The actual bedchambers of Mary, Queen of Scots is part of the visit. Apparently, the bedchambers are the “most famous room in Scotland.” Bold claim. Queen Mary’s private secretary, David Rizzio, was murdered in the supper chambers (adjacent to and part of the bedchamber). There is a plaque and a small red cross marking the location in the Audience Chamber.

This scene is depicted in the 2018 Mary Queen of Scots film. (Who has seen it???) I’m a sucker for historical movies and visiting their filming locations.

The Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Stuart) set up court at Holyrood Palace for only a few weeks, in 1745. During this time, he planned his next moves to take back the British crown for the Stuarts. Following his defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie subsequently retreated to Europe for the remainder of his life.

2. Photos of the Holyrood Abbey

I’ve introduced the Holyrood Abbey above, but there’s something about old ruins that are quite breathtaking. It’s a wonderful place to walk around.

3. Clarification on Balmoral vs. the Holyrood Palace

Since initially writing this article, many people shared their confusion over Holyrood Palace versus Balmoral being the King’s residence in Scotland. To clarify, Balmoral is the King’s private residence in Scotland. It was purchased privately by Prince Albert (Queen Victoria’s husband) in 1848, and passed down through the royal family.

The official residences of the British monarchy , which are owned by the Crown (owned by the British monarch, by virtue of their position as King or Queen) include:

• Buckingham Palace – official London residence
• Windsor Castle – official country residence
• Holyrood Palace – official Scottish residence
• Hillsborough Castle – official residence in Northern Ireland

Other places, like Balmoral or Sandringham House, are their private residences that are owned personally, and passed down within the family.

4. Information & FAQ on how to visit Holyrood Palace

Holyrood Palace is located in Edinburgh, at the bottom of the Royal Mile, opposite of the Scottish Parliament Building. At the other end of the Royal Mile is Edinburgh Castle.

Can the public visit Holyrood Palace?

• YES absolutely, unless the King is in Residence. Previously, Queen Elizabeth normally stayed at Holyrood Palace during “Royal Week” in Scotland – from the end of June to the beginning of July. King Charles would likely keep this same tradition.
• As this is a working royal palace, there will be some unexpected closures.

When are the Holyrood Palace opening times?

• The Palace of Holyroodhouse is open Thursday to Sunday, from 9:30 am.
• Between 1 April – 31 October, the Palace of Holyroodhouse closes at 18:00.
• From 1 November – 31 March, the palace closes at 16:30.

Should I book tickets in advance?

• YES – you’ll need to book tickets in advance, with a specified time slot for entry, so visit their website for more information.

How much do Palace of Holyroodhouse tickets cost in 2022?

• Tickets currently costs 17.50 – 18.50 GBP for an adult ticket (depending on low/high season). This comes with a multimedia guide for a self-guided tour. The multimedia set includes stories and insights into the palace and its famous former residents.
• Families can save up to 15 GBP for booking directly with Palace of Holyrood House.
• The ticket to the Holyrood Palace also includes entrance to the Holyrood Abbey.

Are photos allowed at the Palace of Holyroodhouse?

• Photos are now allowed inside for non-commercial purposes, but was not when I visited! 🙂

• If you enjoyed Holyrood Palace, you can easily convert your ticket into a 1-year pass! Just let palace staff know on your way out. You’ll sign and date the ticket, while staff stamp it. You’ll then have a valid entrance ticket for the next year!

5. Parting Thoughts on the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh

Personally, I really enjoyed Holyrood Palace, primarily because of its long and rich history. I also felt that the audioguide was quite interesting, and well done. However, being in the bedchambers of Mary Queen of Scots, and knowing what happened to her private secretary there, was quite somber and very surreal.

And I loved walking around the ruins of the Holyrood Abbey. It’s incredible to think that it’s been there since the early 12th century. So much history has taken place on the ground of the Palace of the Holyrood House! For those history buffs or people simply interested in learning more, I’d highly recommend a visit to Holyrood House.

1. Scottish National Gallery

Situated in the heart of Edinburgh, the Scottish National Gallery is a small but delightful museum. While Scottish artists are the main focus, the National Gallery also houses works of art from famous European artists.

My all time favorite in the Scottish National Gallery

Originally commissioned in 1850, along with two other paintings, for the House of Lords in Westminster. When completed, the House of Commons refused to grant the 150£ to pay for the commission. Subsequently, sold to private collectors, The Monarch of the Glen changed hands among the aristocracy, until 1916 when Pears Soap acquired the painting for its advertising campaigns. According to Wikipedia,

It was sold on to John Dewar & Sons distillery and became their trademark before similarly being used by Glenfiddich. The painting was then acquired as part of the purchase of Dewar’s by Diageo. In 1997 Diageo sold Dewar’s to Bacardi but this did not include ancillary assets. Diageo then loaned the painting to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. On 2 November 2016, Diageo announced their intention to sell the painting, as they stated it had “no direct link to our business or brands”.

Valued in 2016 at £8 million, Diageo offered the National Galleries of Scotland The Monarch at half price, if it could raise the £4 million. Spoiler alert: it did.

As you can see, the painting is stunning and regal. Its history is an interesting one. And its likeness has been used by brands and companies for over a hundred years. To learn more about the painting, click here.

2. Scottish National Portrait Gallery

The museum holds about 3,000 portraits and sculptures, 38,000 photographs, and 25,000 prints and drawings. Following the Scottish Reformation, religious art fell out of fashion and paved the way for a pleathora of portraits. Portraiture was a luxury of nobility and royalty, as you’ll see in the photos below. Today, the gallery houses portraits of Scots, despite not necessarily being made by Scots.

When you first walk in, you’re greeted in The Great Hall, by a massive mural, painted by William Hole. In 1898, he painted a processional frieze for the entrance hall, which shows over 150 heroes of Scotland on murals that decorate the arches on the ground floor. On the first floor, added later, Hole painted a series of murals that depict important scenes from Scottish history. And finally, on the ceiling, beautiful constellations.

My 2 favorites in the National Portrait Gallery

The next two portraits, one painted, one photographed, stopped me in my track, as I went around the gallery. I did a double take with both of them. Although I recognized them, it took me a while to figure out how.

Ewen Bremner, a Scottish actor born in Edinburgh, is best known his role in Trainspotting. I’ve never seen it, but I remember him as Red from Pearl Harbor.

I give you, Ser Jorah Mormont. Just kidding… Iain Glen, also a Scottish actor born in Edinburgh, is most known for his work on Game of Thrones, as well as the Resident Evil series.

Why did I single out these two portraits? Walking through an art museum seeing portraits of only royals and people you don’t know or recognize, they were friendly faces and a welcome sight.

Parting Thoughts on the National Galleries of Scotland

The galleries are definitely worth a visit, especially if you’re looking for a free activity for an afternoon. As I mentioned before, these are two of the three Scottish National Galleries, with the other being the Scotland National Gallery of Modern Art. If you’re an art fan, take some time to visit one, two, or all three of them!

And since no one will be visiting in person during the time of covid, I hope you enjoyed your virtual tour of all my favorites! More importantly, stay safe!

This trip to Scotland has made me realize how much I really like Scottish food. There’s amazing Scottish breakfasts, desserts, scones, black pudding, haggis… mmm.. just thinking about it makes me nostalgic and happy. Besides more traditional Scottish fare, Edinburgh is also home to a few high end restaurants that deserve a certain level of fanfare, as well. 21212 is exactly one of those restaurants.

Chef Paul Kitching opened 21212 in May 2009. When I arrived for lunch in May 2019, 21212 was celebrating their 10th anniversary. At that time, they were also one of the few restaurants in Edinburgh with a Michelin star, which they’ve held from 2009 – 2019. The restaurant is located in a gorgeous, Georgian townhouse in Edinburgh’s New Town, with a lush dining room. 21212 is open Wednesday to Saturday.

For lunch, you can choose to have anywhere from a sensible 2-course meal for 28£, to a decadent 5-course meal for 55£. For the regular readers to my blog, it should be no surprise to you what I leaned toward the decadent side – the 4-course meal for 42£. In case you’re wondering where the name 21212 comes from, it is the number of choices per course.

So, without further ado, here is everything I ate at 21212.

Amuse Bouche and Starter: Chips and Bread

The first thing to arrive was a small cup of potato chips. Light, amazingly fried – who could resist? For my British readers, I don’t mean chips (as in fries). I mean chips, as in “crisps”. Oh, the nuances between American and British English!

The introductory bread was made with spinach, red pepper, cheese, baked with fruit and fennel seeds inside. It was both fluffy and dense, and served deliciously warm. I definitely had more than one piece!

1st course: Kidnapped in Scotland

21212 Tasting Menu, course #1

Don’t let the name alarm you, though it is definitely alarming. On the menu, the description for Kidnapped in Scotland said only “Chefs Favourites.” Curious what it is? You certainly can’t tell from the photo. Here’s a little selfie of me during this course, to prove that I was not in fact kidnapped.

The main part of it (big photo) is smoked salmon with haddock haggis, topped with a mushroom parchment, There is also black pudding and mushroom soaked in Madeira. Loved the smoky flavors and the different textures! Absolutely delicious.

The second part (below the duck feet cup) could be eaten with the main, or on its own. Inside the duck feet cup, is a rhubarb, horseradish and caviar compote, paired with a sesame, strawberry pancake. There was another pancake you could choose from, but sesame and strawberry are some of my favorite ice cream flavors, so why not? It was light and crunchy, and went really well with the compote.

2nd course: Rainy allotment soup

Looking back, I am kind of tickled with the names of their courses. The Rainy Allotment Soup? Gotta have it, considering how rainy Scotland really is. This soup was a foamy mushroom puree, with red pepper and cabbage. Foamy soups are kind of a thing now, and I am fully on board with this trend. Plus, not to mention, I absolutely love a mushroom soup!

3rd course: Chicken “Surprise”

As you can see from the photo, there is a lot going on. Besides the menu description in the caption above, there were lots of other bits and bobbles that made up the dish. Somewhere in the photo, there is also a curry honeycomb, the obvious chive across the top, and some kind of beignet. For me, the chicken could have been cooked two seconds longer – the light rosiness in the center does not spark any joy in me. But this course was complex, unique, a little confusing at times, but nonetheless good.

4th (skipped) course: Cheese

If you want to go all in with the lunch menu, it also includes a cheese course. The menu described the cheeses included as “a fine Brexit selection.” See what I mean about interesting names here?

Between the main course and the dessert, they served me a palate cleanser. Sorry to say that I can’t remember what it was, but more importantly, how cute is this cow?

5th course: Yellow Pink White

Of the two dessert choices, of course I had to choose the one that included the word “pink”. Creativity is definitely a strong suit, here at 21212. There aren’t too many desserts, besides a strawberry ice cream, that would actually be pink.

Also, I never would have expected a dessert to include a drink, among other things. The drink was tart, but tasty. The rice ambrosia was similar to a creme brûlée, with carmelized sugar on top. The strawberry thing on top… I expected it to have a crunch. But it was more soft, in a “melts in your mouth” kind of way. The dessert was good, don’t get me wrong, but I think I would have liked soemthing richer – something more chocolatey.

Parting Thoughts on 21212 Edinburgh

Overall, this was a great meal!! Although I selected the 4-course option, the 2 or 3-course options would have been equally as delightful, and more affordable for a lunch. At the time I ate at 21212, they still had one Michelin star. It makes me wonder what happened in the few months after I ate. I ate there in June, and by October, the star they held for 10 years was no more. Regardless of its star status, I would definitely recommend 21212 if you’re looking for a nice meal in Edinburgh. Given the creativity of the courses, the weekly changes in menu, as well as the absolutely gorgeous interior, it makes for a wonderful addition to your Edinburgh trip.

When I travel, I love to experience a place through its food. Having visited Scotland three times in two years, I cannot truly say that I am an expert in either Scotland or Scottish breakfast. But, I can confidently say that I am in fact an expert in breakfast – eating it, that is. Breakfast is absolutely my favorite meal of the day. Scottish breakfasts are no different. They’re a deliciously filling way to start your Scottish adventure.

Introduction to Full Scottish Breakfast

Scottish breakfasts are very similar to a full English breakfast. In both, you’ll find rashers of bacon, sauteed mushrooms, roasted (or fried) tomatoes, beans, and eggs. However, Scottish breakfasts have additional items that make it a quintessentially Scottish meal.

Haggis

Haggis is generally considered the National Dish of Scotland. For those who haven’t tried it, it is a savory pudding, comprised of sheep’s heart, liver and lungs, minced with onion, oatmeal, spices. Traditionally, this is all cooked from inside the casing of a sheep’s stomach. Haggis is normally served in slices.

Unfortunately for Americans, the import of haggis has been banned in the US since 1971, due to the inclusion of one ingredient. Can you guess which one? Apparently, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifies that no food for human consumption, made locally or abroad, can contain… sheep’s lung.

Don’t think too much about the ingredients and give it a try!

Black pudding

Another savory pudding, black pudding is typically found in British and Irish cuisines. Black pudding is a blood sausage, typically made with pork’s blood (but also cow or sheep), along with oats, spices, fat and/or barley. Some of the herbs and spices typically used: mint, marjoram, thyme, and pennyroyal.

Normally, Scottish breakfast has either black pudding or haggis. My guess is because both are very hearty, filling proteins. Breakfast at the Cromlix Hotel includes both!

Lorne sausage

For clarification purposes, a lorne sausage is a “square sausage” made from minced meat, rusk (twice-baked bread), and spices. The sausage in the above photo from Cromlix is not a Lorne sausage. And all of my research seems to suggest that the only reason this sausage is special is because it’s square-shaped. If anyone has any commentary on the Lorne sausage, I am happy to hear it!

Update, as of 25 March 2020: Having now had the time to visit a Scottish supermarket, I was so pleased to find Lorne sausage. They were indeed square shaped patties. When fried up with breakfast, the outside was crunchy, and it was heavy and dense due to the rusk. Absolutely delicious!! The photo is from a “breakfast for dinner” I made, here in Scotland, hence the random roasted veggies along with eggs and Lorne sausage.

Tattie Scone

Well, first of all, a “tattie” is a potato. Therefore, a tattie scone is … yep! You guessed it, a potato scone! They’re much thinner than scones that you would normally think of. In fact, I would say they’re as thin as a piece of pita bread or a thick tortilla! See the tattie scones in the below post? Don’t they look like tortillas?

One thing that I will say is that Scottish hospitality is just amazing! So much so that the below is the breakfast spread for one person – me! This was at an Airbnb, when I stayed up in the North Highlands, near Wick. With Scotland and their amazing hospitality, you will never go hungry!

YES – and it’s incredible!

I was introduced to Eat Walk Edinburgh by my sister and brother-in-law, who had a delicious experience with them the previous year. Never one to turn down a great recommendation, I selected the Edinburgh Old Town and New Town food tour.

1. Hotel Du Vin

When I set out for the food tour, it was a brisk, February afternoon in Edinburgh.  Not too cold, but definitely a chill in the air.  The food tour began at Hotel Du Vin, a luxury hotel in the Old Town, housed in a series of old stone buildings.  Back in the day, the location was once the town’s poor house, insane asylum, science laboratory and blood donation center.

At Bistro Du Vin, we met our guide, Alan, and began our first course – smoked salmon. I’m not sure if people realize, but Scotland has an incredible seafood industry. And their salmon is famous! Unfortunately most of it is imported, so if you get the chance to eat Scottish seafood locally, take it!

The smoked salmon was absolutely delicious!  So light and refreshing. A great start to the Edinburgh food tour. 

On the way to our second stop, we passed by some cute shops and interesting landmarks in town.

2. Makars Gourmet Mash Bar

Our next stop on the Edinburgh food tour was Makars Gourmet Mash Bar, which calls itself “healthy, Scottish comfort food.”

We tasted some ox-cheek braised for 5 hours over mashed potato, with a side of black pudding. After being braised for so long, the ox cheek melted in your mouth. Our comfort food was paired with raspberry gin from the Edinburgh Gin Distillery. The bubbly (raspberry gin and prosecco) was light and perfect.  Beware… I was definitely a little tipsy afterward.

The above photos of the oxtail and black pudding is only a sample portion for the food tour.  Imagine my surprise when I went back the following day, and the regular portion was huge!

3. Scotch Malt Whisky Society

An Edinburgh Food Tour is not a real tour without whisky! The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a members-only whisky tasting club and the host for our next tasting. I love that the food tour gives you access to an exclusive whisky club in Edinburgh.

What better way to pad your stomach for the upcoming whisky, than with some haggis, neeps and tatties!

Haggis comprises of sheep’s heart, liver, and lung, along with some minced mutton or beef. Combine it all with oatmeal with spices. It is stuffed into a sheep’s stomach and boiled.  Haggis is illegal in the US – it has something to do with the sheep’s lung! So, I really didn’t know what to expect.

It was actually really good – very hearty and heavy.  All of these ingredients separately, I may not have enjoyed as much.  But together, it’s pretty darn tasty and I highly recommend it. At least to try!

Findlay’s of Portobello, a family run butcher shop, made the haggis that we tasted.  Fun fact, most haggis that you see on any menu will have the name of the butcher shop it comes from.  Locals often have a favorite butchers for their haggis. 

The haggis came with a tasting of whisky, at 62% alcohol. As my first foray into whisky, it was smoky and too harsh for me. At the time, I was not a whisky drink. That changed. I really enjoy the sophisticated, complex flavors and smells. You just have to find the ones you like, since they are all so different from each other!

Fun facts about Scotch Whisky

I’ve written a more technical introduction to Scotch after my visit to Islay – Scotland’s whisky island. So head over there if you want to learn a bit more, coming from an island devoted to the spirit!

Now. Onto the fun facts that I learned.

Whisky is normally a clear-colored spirit, but the color comes from the oils in the wood cask that it sits in.  The whisky we tasted is a lighter color than you’d imagine. Most whiskys have a caramel color added to it in the blending process. That way, each bottle looks the same color and tastes the same. 

The whiskies they have at the Scotch Malt Whisky Society are unblended. Each cask tastes slightly different from the other, unlike what we are used to in mass production exporting.  Each bottle at the society is bottled into their anonymous bottles, labeled only with a number (corresponding to the distillery and cask number) and the color sticker of the taste profile. 

Also, two side notes about Scottish whisky. 

1. Whisky is spelled W-H-I-S-K-Y (without the E) in Scotland, Japan, and Canada. Whiskey, with an e, is American or Irish;
2. Apparently, 85% of Scottish whiskys are aged in bourbon casks shipped from the US.

And now that you’re an expert on whisky and haggis like I am, onto the next stop! From here on out, I was full on tipsy and red.

4. Le De-Vin

Our next stop was a French wine bar, Le De-Vin, housed in an old Tudor building, where we snacked on a charcuterie plate with French and Scottish cheeses.  I love soft cheeses, so this was obviously a huge favorite of mine.

There was an option to snack on this with a beer, but no more drinks for me! Not on this tour anyway. I still need to be able to walk to dessert.

Also, don’t forget to take a good look at the chalkboard wall inside Le De-Vin. Notable Scots on the left (William Wallace, Sean Connery, and Billy Connolly among others), with notable French on the right (Edith Piaf and Joan of Arc and others).

5. Ghillie Dhu

The final stop on the Edinburgh Food tour – the Ghillie Dhu (pronounced with a hard G, the gilly doo), where we had some dessert.  The Ghillie Dhu is a solitary, male fairy, who lives in the northwest highlands. Although he’s described as relatively timid, he also has a wild side. Those fairies… gotta watch out for their antics!

So the dessert. It was a chocolate cup, with some whisky cream inside.  Topped with a cookie.  I think it was their Ghillie Boozy Cranachan, but don’t quote me on that. Typically a cranachan is a raspberry and cream dessert.

But the Ghillie Dhu take on the cranachan is also worth trying! Think of the ingredients – chocolate, whisky cream, cookie, raspberry drizzle. What’s not to love?

6. Become and honorary Scot on your Edinburgh Food Tour

Bellies full and probably buzzing, you are on your way to becoming an honorary Scot.  According to Alan, requirements for the title of honorary Scot:

• Haggis – check
• Whisky – check
• Irn Bru – complete on your own adventure.  You can’t miss the bright orange cans of fizzy energy.

It’d be too easy, if you were made an honorary Scot after taking one tour, right?

7. Parting Thoughts on the Edinburgh Food Tour

And that’s it for my Edinburgh food tour on my first trip to Scotland! And what a great introduction to Scottish food.  The Edinburgh food tour opened my eyes to the gorgeous, fresh produce and ingredients that Scotland is full of! Although Scotland isn’t known for it’s food, the food scene is definitely on the rise!

To conclude and reiterate my love for food tours… Food tours really are the best!! The next time I’m in Edinburgh, I want to try their other tours, just to taste different foods and get introduced to new restaurants!
