The explanation

Hello everyone!  And welcome to the inaugural post of Lannie’s Food & Travel Blog.  The idea of a travel blog has been percolating in my head for quite some time. And since I have new and exciting news for 2018, I decided it was time for me to share my love of food and travel with the world.

Before I explain my plans for 2018, I wanted to reflect on 2017. I had just completed a 2-year stint in Singapore and was desperate to move to Europe. Given the current geopolitical climate, it’s no wonder that companies think twice about extending work visas to Americans.  I was close a couple of times, which didn’t work out. I started looking for jobs in the US, which would allow me to travel, which is what I love to do.  Again, I got close a couple of times, but for one reason or other, nothing worked out.

I also began graduate school (again) in 2017 in a program which is completed mostly remotely.  What’s unique is that this program requires me to be in Vienna, Austria for two weeks of coursework, every quarter, for two years. Imagine trying to persuade employers to let me have that kind of time off.  Some were very flexible and accommodating during interviews.  Others laughed or scoffed in my face.  For me, the pursuit of education is a must for anyone looking to grow personally, emotionally, or even professionally.

And that’s how I arrived at my decision for 2018. I cannot, in good conscience, earn a degree and only see the four walls of my parents’ home (which is where I am holed out, as present). Learning is about going out and seeing and doing and experiencing. So, beginning in 11 days, I will be travelling almost full time, from place to place, and arriving in Vienna, every few months.

Join me as I eat and experience my way through the world!  So happy and content to have arrived at my decision and hope you enjoy living vicariously through me!
